Armitage talks Hobbit, the Battle of the Five Armies, Into The Storm, Schwarzenegger and more

RichardArmitageDigitalSpyInterview01 Richard Armitage is really doing the rounds pressing the flesh lately and chatting with journos. Here’s another interview, this time with Joe.ie.

A couple of interesting quotes:

If you look at the detail on the Lake-town set (in The Hobbit: The Desolation Of Smaug) some of the glasses have specific carvings into the glass and the cutlery –- it’s astonishing and the camera sees it all.

…even the title, the Battle Of The Five Armies, suggests something that is going to be pretty epic. When I saw the model of the battle ground, which was in a little secret room that you could sneak into and take a look at, something made me realise that Tolkien’s description of that battle is quite limited to where Peter has expanded it to.

JOE: Morning Richard, how are you today?

RA:I’m good thanks, very good.

JOE: How’s the head anyway? You were at the Empire Awards last night, yeah?

RA:I was but I didn’t hammer it too badly on the Jamesons, but it was good. We won Best Sci-Fi Fantasy and Aidan (Aidan Turner, Armitage’s co-star in The Hobbit films and Dublin native) walked away with Best Male Newcomer so yeah, it was a good night.

JOE: Yeah, it was brilliant news for the film and for Aidan as well. You obviously spotted his incredible talent up close when you were working on The Hobbit films with him…

RA: Yeah, he was such a great guy to work with. He was playing my nephew which was a little bit disconcerting considering that we’re not that far away in age, but he’s a great guy and he’s made something really exciting with that character. We’ve got some nice moments coming up in the third movie together.

JOE: How did you actually first get involved with The Hobbit? I imagine that getting a phone call to say that Peter Jackson wants to work with you has got to be pretty special?

RA: It is, and the fact that you even get to go into the room and audition for it is something that you think “God, I never would have thought that would happen” and then, when they turn around and say they’d like to cast you, it’s all a bit of a blur.
You move on and you have to take stock and think that actually really happened to me, and then on another level I was quite surprised that they wanted me to come and play a dwarf. I never thought that I would play a dwarf. I’m usually too tall for everything but yeah it was great and it was a bit of a no-brainer really.

JOE: And how is it working with a filmmaker and visionary like Peter Jackson?

RA: It’s pretty amazing. He leads from the top and he works in such detail, I know that he expects nothing less from the people that work around him. He hires people that are uncompromising and he asks the things that nobody thinks are possible and they all go away and they make it happen.

When you see that happening with his crew, his designers, the innovators and his digital technicians, it makes me work in a more detailed way and that was the most exciting part of it, down to every single buckle and button on the shoes and coats. I think he realised that, because he was going to be shooting on 48-frames per second, that so much detail was required in the final image, but also in the layers of the character; the writing is incredibly detailed and specific and it’s exciting to work like that.

JOE: Speaking of the buckles and buttons, here at JOE we’re huge fans of The Lord Of The Rings books and film adaptations and it’s clear to see the detail that goes into the design of the costumes and weapons. Do you actually get to keep any of the really cool souvenirs from the set for yourselves though?

RA: At the end of the shoot they gave me my sword, which is now one of my prized treasures. Again it’s the detail of the sword and the workmanship and craftsmanship that goes into it. It’s not a fake sword, it’s a real crafted sword that is useable, not that I would…

DofS blurayWith the release this past Tuesday of the Blu-ray and DVD Editions of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, there was a bit of confusion concerning several video advertisements and the bonus material on the discs.

The videos embedded below – “Beorn the Shapeshifter” and “Laketown – Entering the World of Men”, as well as a “Giant Mirkwood Spiders” video on the L.A. Times website – contained snippets of behind the scenes video and interviews that many could not find of the discs.

Warner Brothers has now informed us that these are promotional pieces created to promote the release, and do not include material from the discs themselves.

The Bonus disc on both the Blu-ray and Special Edition DVD releases do, however, contain the following content:

- Peter Jackson Invites You to the Set (In the Company of The Hobbit & All in a Day’s Work) ~ 41 minutes
- Production Videos ~ 37 minutes
- Live Event: In the Cutting Room ~ 38 minutes
- New Zealand: Home of Middle-earth, Part 2 ~ 7 minutes
- Trailers & Previews ~ 12 minutes
- Music Video “I See Fire” by Ed Sheeran ~ 6 minutes

One little critique from me is the second question, where they ask about the relationship between Thorin and Frodo!  Wrong Hobbit guys ;)  That aside it’s an interesting interview, enjoy.

RA B&WWith the Home Video release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug (which becomes available this week in Australia, Brazil and parts of Europe), Richard Armitage has been busy giving interviews, as we’ve been posting over the past week or so. He found time to sit down again with staffer greendragon, and they chatted about finding Thorin’s voice one last time, what he’s working on now, and what it was like to fill (literally!) those mighty dwarven boots… Here’s what he had to say:

greendragon: Congrats on The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug’s win [for Best SciFi/Fantasy movie] at the Empire Awards!

Richard Armitage: I know! It was funny when they were saying ‘Scifi/Fantasy’.  I think it was SciFi OR Fantasy – I was like, ‘Are we Science Fiction? I don’t remember any spaceships in The Hobbit…’ [laughs]

GD: They just lump it all together! It was nice to see that some of you were gathered at the Awards, and it looked like everyone was having a great time. James Nesbitt did a great job of hosting.

RA: Yeah it was really good to see everybody.  I think Luke [Evans] came, but he had to disappear because he was doing some reshoots so I didn’t manage to catch up with him…

GD: So we’re all excited for the Home Video release of The Desolation of Smaug; and then with convention season kicking off, everything’s gearing up for the final film. How does it feel to be moving in to the final leg of this epic journey you’ve all been on?

RA: Well, I know for sure that we’re not going to be filming any more material for the third film. That was something which was a bit up in the air; but there is a bit of sound work to do – a bit of ADR post production voice stuff, which I’m really looking forward to doing, and to seeing the cut of the film. You know, it’s been a while since we were in New Zealand, so I’ve kind of forgotten what we did – so it will be nice to go back and see how that’s shaping up. But I think it will be quite a nostalgic event. It’s probably going to be the last time that Middle-earth is seen on the big screen. Peter’s intention to have six films which sit all along side each other will be contained in that one event at the end of the year – so it wouldn’t surprise me if we see some old faces back on the red carpet, in celebration of fifteen years of Peter’s work!

GD: It certainly feels like a big deal for the fans – as you say, fifteen years of Middle-earth as Peter Jackson has envisaged it.  People are going to be quite sad, I think, to feel that things are coming to an end.

RA: Yes! I mean, what are you guys going to write about when there’s nothing Middle-earth to talk about?! [laughs]

GD: You know, there’s always something! We might end up seeing a Hobbit symphony, like The Lord of the Rings symphony… There are always events popping up. Tolkien hasn’t been  around for a while and we’re still talking about him!

RA: Maybe there’ll be a Silmarillion as well, who knows?

GD: Who knows what might happen?  Is it going to be quite strange, though, to come back to doing Thorin’s voice again for the ADR work? As you say, it’s been a while; in some ways, presumably, you must have moved on from the role, with other projects in mind and other things going on in your life…

300640id5b_TheHobbit_TDOS_Thorin_BusShelter_48inW_x_70inH.inddRA: Yeah.  It’s interesting because I did a certain regime of voice work to try and find Thorin’s voice, which I’m really pleased that I did, because now I can go back to my tapes and repeat that work, and hope that Thorin’s voice comes out. It’s not so different from my own voice, but there’s a certain pitch and gravel to it that I’ll need. It takes a while to get back in to; but hopefully I’ll be able to do it!

GD: When you do move on from this role, when it is all over with The Hobbit films, what do you think will stay with you from this, both in terms of your life experience, and in terms of aspects of the character? What do you think will be with you in twenty years?

RA: I think the actual memory of filming it; going to the other side of the world for such a long time… I mean, I still wake up and think that I’m in the house that I stayed at in New Zealand, and that I can hear the sea… Everything about it – it was such a sensory experience.  Walking through the studio gates at 4am when it was dark, and leaving when it was dark; seeing all the new sets; every time we walked on set… I just don’t think it will ever leave me. And you know, the process of getting into the character, and putting on the prosthetics; it’s deeply embedded in me, because we repeated it so many times. Putting on the boots and walking as Thorin…  I kind of wish I had those boots, I wish I’d kept them!

GD: Do you feel an ownership of the role? If you were reading The Hobbit, would you sort of feel, ‘Oh, that’s me I’m reading about’?

RA: You know what, I feel like there is a sort of nod [in the films] to the character in Tolkien’s book… but my very first impression of The Hobbit [book] probably hasn’t changed. The version that we played of Thorin is very much about Philippa Boyens’ brilliant screenplay; so it sits somewhere between the two. I will probably pick up Tolkien and be reminded of what Philippa, Fran and Pete did with it; which I think is great, because their job is not just to put the book on screen, but to develop all of those ideas and take us into another world.

GD: Talking of ownership of the role – what do you think about the fans who do such amazing cosplay, where they dress up as the characters? I know one lady who does an absolutely brilliant Thorin; I wondered what you think when you see these folks with incredible costumes on which they have lavished hours of work, and they come out as dead ringers for the characters.

RA: I know! And a lot of them are women – and they’re growing their own beards and everything! It’s kind of amazing that they can do that… [laughs] No, I’ve seen a few bearded ladies… I think it’s brilliant. I’m always immensely impressed at the workmanship, and the way that they’ve looked at the costumes and copied them – I think it’s pretty amazing. And I’m sure it’s one of the reasons why the costume design is so detailed – because they know that people will look at it in that kind of detail, and study it.

GD: With regard to what’s next: each time we’ve spoken, you’ve had various potential irons in the fire but nothing that’s grabbed you as being the next big project for you. Do you have anything coming up which you can tell us about?

Urban GrimshawRA: I’m doing a British independent film at the moment, which is called Urban and the Shed Crew, which is based on a book written in 2005 about an ex social worker who is having trouble with his own life, and spiralling into drink and drugs, and he befriends a little eleven year old street kid, and they have this journey together. It’s a really beautiful story, and it ticks a few boxes for me: it’s based on a really interesting piece of literature, but also based on living people, who have been working with us on set. I don’t know what the movie will be – it may just end up at the festivals – but I’m having a great time making it, and I get to play opposite a really brilliant eleven year old kid, who is teaching me how to act!

GD: Kids often have a natural instinct for it, don’t you find? They don’t overthink it…

RA: Well sometimes they do; sometimes kids are highly coached. But this little boy is very, very natural and really instinctive, and it’s great – it’s like a little ‘back to school’ for me!

GD: Are we likely to see you at any conventions this year? I’m hoping we can persuade you to come to DragonCon in Atlanta…

RA: Well I have to find out when they are – I haven’t heard of anything in the imminent future. I think we’re definitely going to go to [San Diego] ComicCon; we’re definitely going to be there this year.

GD: Thinking about going forward – having had this experience of being in a huge franchise with an enormous fan base, would you be reluctant to undertake a project again which has such a following already in place, or has it been an experience that you would enjoy repeating?

RA: Oh yeah – I would do it again in a heartbeat! It’s so exciting to be part of something; especially when it’s one character playing – I mean, I think this is quite a unique experience, that it’s one character over three films, but playing through one journey. I think that’s quite remarkable. Yeah, I’d love to do another big franchise like this.

GD: Good – I’m glad we haven’t scared you away!

RA: No way! No way!

GD: One of the fans asked me to say to you how proud they all are of the work that everybody has done. I certainly know that many of the fans feel a kind of ownership of what Peter Jackson and all of you have created in Tolkien’s realm; there’s a great deal of love for it, and many people have said to me, ‘I just want an opportunity to tell them how proud we are of what they’ve done!’

RA: Oh good. I mean, that’s very heartwarming – because they’re the people that we know will be watching in so much more detail than everybody else. You’ve got to play and create your character in that much detail, because I know that people will be seeing it like that, and seeing it again and again… With the DVD release, they can watch it to their heart’s content! And I know they will; so it’s good to know that it’s being seen and appreciated.

richard aGD: One last thing I’m interested to ask you about – I keep reading about your fascination with Richard III, and that you have interest in making a film about him. I just wondered what truth there is in any of that?

RA: It was an idea that I had a while back. But my interest in it is really a hobby, of reading biographies, and I was once working with a script writer on something. I don’t know whether a documentary would be of interest… it’s difficult, finding something which is going to be commercially interesting, and for an audience – I don’t know how many people would be that excited about him… My interest in him doesn’t necessarily have to manifest itself in a piece of work. Even if it’s me going back on stage and playing him; it’s purely a hobby for me.

GD: It’s a fascinating topic – particularly when you consider how Shakespeare has painted him into one particular corner…

RA: Yeah, I mean Shakespeare really created a bit of a pantomime and put him at the centre of it. It’s a brilliant thriller, but I don’t know how biased Shakespeare was… Well, I do know how biased he was, because he was writing for a Tudor monarch! But I think there’s a tale to tell. I think the BBC maybe are investigating doing a project about Richard, but we’ll see. I think there’s always room for a new take on it; and there’s plenty of literature out there. The Daughter of Time [Josephine Tey] is such an interesting book, and that would be worth exploring.

GD: Well, thanks Richard –  it’s always good to chat. Hopefully we’ll talk again around the release of The Hobbit: There and Back Again.

RA: I’m sure we will see each other sometime in November, on our vast press tour! Take care!

Smaug the Magnificent indeed!  We had some incredible entries to our ‘Show us your passion for Smaug’ contest – it was as difficult to pick winners as we expected it to be. The panel of TORn staff judges really enjoyed seeing entries from all over the world; we received art work from countries such as Serbia, Australia, China, Slovakia, and Thailand, to name but a few! The dragons came in all shapes and sizes; as well as beautiful paintings and sketches, we received photographs of sculptures, decorated cakes, costumes, LEGO creations, knitted and sewn wyverns, and even a candle holder, a carved pumpkin and a jewelry Smaug!

Ten judges thought long and hard, and awarded points based on factors such as skill, originality, design, and what made us smile! We finally narrowed it down – and then had a tie, and had to vote again! At last we can reveal the winners. [Drum roll...]

Runner up in the Youth Category is Mya, with her Erebor diorama.  Check out the tiny Bilbo in the bottom right corner!

Mya A3

Mya wins the Thorin bookmark and pen set from The Noble Collection, plus the regular DVD/Blu-ray combo pack of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

The winner in the Youth Category is Grace, with her beautiful sculpture.  Several staffers said they’d like to have this amongst their collectibles!

Grace A2

Grace wins the Smaug pendant and necklace from The Noble Collection, plus the regular DVD/Blu-ray combo pack of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Special mentions in the Youth Category go to Anne B, Margaret D and Sian C, for their original and stunning entries. (Margaret’s was made from aluminium foil!)

In the Main Category, the runner up is Collette, with her incredible, dynamic image.

Collette Smaug

Collette wins a copy of the Limited Collector’s Edition DVD and Blu-ray of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Finally – the Main Category first prize goes to Natalie’s splendid beast!

Natalie A2

Natalie wins the Orcrist replica from The Noble Collection, and a regular DVD/Blu-ray combo pack of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.

Special mention in the Main Category goes to Jeremy S, with his amazing flying Smaug, which we couldn’t resist showing you here:

Jeremy S1

Many thanks to ALL who entered the competition – we loved seeing your work, and choosing just a few winners was harder than taking on Gollum in a riddle contest… Congratulations to all the winners – don’t forget to respond to the emails which have been sent to you, to claim your prizes!

Stay tuned for another contest coming SOON from TheOneRing.net, with a spectacular prize - this one is for those of you who are handy with a camera…

hobbitconlogoThe convention season is about to start in a big way with TheOneRing.net appearing at shows across the U.S. and even at a special event in Europe. HobbitCon in Bonn, Germany, is packed full of Hobbit and Tolkien guests, including our own MrCere (Larry D. Curtis) who will present several panels about, as you might guess, The Hobbit.

Joining him is an amazing collection of 12 star guests that includes actors from The Hobbit film and Royd Tolkien, great-grandson of J.R.R. Tolkien. The lineup of special guests includes Sir Richard Taylor, some fan films and other prominent figures from the world-wide Tolkien community. Tickets are no longer on sale online but day or weekend tickets can be purchased directly from the event at the Maritim Hotel If you are in Europe this is an event without peer.

WONDERCON

Wondercon logoFrom the same folks who stage the world-famous San Diego Comic-Con, comes WonderCon in Anaheim, with a pretty incredible lineup that also includes TheOneRing.net staff previewing the last movie from Peter Jackson about Middle-earth, “The Hobbit: There and Back Again.” That can’t-miss panel takes place Saturday, April 19 at 5:30 p.m., in room 300DE.

We also will have a table on the sales floor to get exclusive TORn t-shirts and talk to staffers about all things Middle-earth. Our all-volunteer staff has an abundant representation in Los Angeles, making this a way to meet our friends.

MORE CONVENTIONS

CALGARY EXPO: April 24-27, Calgary. Staffers greendragon and Deej join a powerful Middle-earth lineup of guests that includes Sean Astin, Billy Boyd, Jed Brophy, Manu Bennett, and Dean O’Gorman. Also featured is Weta’s incomparable Richard Taylor. TORn will sell our exclusive convention shirts and meet fans and friends face-to-face!

FANTASYCON July 3 – 5, Salt Lake City. This show, focused on fantasy, has a heavy Middle-earth influence with celebrity guests and rumor has it they will add several others to a lineup that includes Sean Astin, John Rhys-Davies, Sylvester McCoy, Ken Stott and Graham McTavish. TheOneRing.net is partnering with the show and will be present at the celebration of all things fantasy with a booth, panels and some surprises.

SAN DIEGO COMIC-CON The grandaddy of pop-culture events in the world will once again feature Hobbit content from Warner Bros. and TORn. Director Peter Jackson is a likely candidate to be here and as well as a list of celebrities from the film to make their “Hall H” appearance. Plan to wait or camp in line. Our own panel is also in high demand and while nobody can camp overnight, we fill any room the SDCC hands us. This is Mecca for pop-culture. See you there!

DRAGON CON The annual event in Atlanta, Georgia is something of a home for all things Tolkien with the Tolkien Track of programming that definitely features TheOneRing.net and always includes some celebrities from the film world. This focuses on books, film, pop-culture, costuming, dancing, music and everything else you can think of. TORn staffers attending include greendragon, Deej, MrCere, Thorongil, often Quickbeam and usually a few more.

More conventions are likely including the New York Comic Con so expect lots more convention updates.

Hall of Fire chat this Saturday: The Pyre of Denethor

Barliman's Chat This Saturday at 6pm ET, Hall of Fire will be looking at moral dilemnas as we examine our next chapter of The Return of the King — the Pyre of Denethor.

‘…I am frightened. Something terrible may happen up there. The Lord is out of his mind, I think. I am afraid he will kill himself, and kill Faramir too. Can’t you do something?’

Gandalf looked through the gaping Gate, and already on the fields he heard the gathering sound of battle. He clenched his hand. ‘I must go ‘ he said. ‘The Black Rider is abroad, and he will yet bring ruin on us. I have no time.’

‘But Faramir!’ cried Pippin. ‘He is not dead, and they will burn him alive, if someone does not stop them.’

The Return of the King: Book V, Chapter VII: The Pyre of Denethor

Fearing Denethor is about to act rashly, Pippin has sought out Gandalf at the Great Gate of Minas Tirith. As the battle teeters and rages without, Gandalf faces a desperate choice: leave his key foe the run of the field and face down Gondor’s Steward or abandon the ill and helpless Faramir to the vicissitudes of luck.

Meanwhile in Rath Dínen, Beregond fights Denethor’s servants to a standstill over the life of Faramir.

How has the use of the Palantir poisoned the Steward’s mind? How does Gandalf try to win Denethor back to reality? What do you think about Denethor’s end?

Loyalty to and obedience of authority are key virtues in The Lord of the Rings. Yet in this chapter Tolkien examines the price of uncritical obedience. How do you compare Beregond’s acts with those of Denethor’s personal servants? And what about the murder of the porter, can that be justified?

These are just a few of the questions we’ll ponder this weekend as we explore The Pyre of Denethor in the Hall of Fire.

The remote server returned an unexpected response: (417) Expectation failed.
Just a little reminder that as of now, The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is available nationwide (and few other countries) in multiple different formats without that Star Trek crap that Paramount pulls on their releases where special features vary from store to store and format to format. Nope, here it is thankfully the same. In this case the special features are a behind the scenes look at the film based mostly on Jackson's video blogs and music video. The real goodies are being saved the Extended Edition due sometime around Christmas. Hit the links to order from Amazon, with note on average price for each format.

Versions: BR + DVD + Ultraviolet ($23) | 3D BR + BR + DVD + Ultraviolet ($25) | 2 disc DVD ($17) | Limited Edition Book Ends + 3D Combo Pack ($80)

hobbitconlogoAs staffer Garfeimao stated in the post below, convention season is getting going! The same weekend that some TORn staff will be at WonderCon in Anaheim, there is a very exciting convention taking place in Germany – HobbitCon! Message boarder kiwifan attended last year, and shared the fun of this exclusive event with us.  Here’s what she had to say:

“The first HobbitCon last Easter was such a fabulous event that there will be another one this year, much to the delight of the many fans who wished for this happen. Incidentally, the eight Dwarf actors who were among the ‘star guests’ last year enjoyed themselves so much that they are all returning for this one! Anyone interested in reading about our impressions and adventures at last year’s HobbitCon can read more at the message boards, in a thread started by Rosie-with-the-ribbons on the ‘TORn moots and other events’ board.

Although the convention takes place in Germany (at the Maritim Hotel, Bonn), it’s the only international event of this magnitude that focuses exclusively on The Hobbit and other Tolkien-related topics, and according to the HobbitCon organisers, the majority of those who have already bought tickets come from all over the world — other European countries, Russia, America, and even Japan!

Actors present at HobbitCon 2 will be:

Jed Brophy (Nori)Adam Brown (Ori)John Callen (Oin)Mark Hadlow (Dori)Peter Hambleton (Gloin)Stephen Hunter (Bombur)William Kircher (Bifur)Graham McTavish (Dwalin)Dean O’Gorman (Fili)Ken Stott (Balin)and Mark Atkin, who is Richard Armitage’s stunt double as Thorin.

All the actors will be on stage several times in their respective panels and, in some cases, in a couple of comedy shows as well, which, if they are anything like the one last year, will have the audiences in stitches throughout.

hobbitcon1Moreover, WETA Workshop’s creative genius Sir Richard Taylor will be giving two talks and two workshops in which he’ll transform a volunteer member of the audience into a Middle-earth creature!

Also present will be Royd Tolkien, J.R.R. Tolkien’s great-grandson, who’ll give two panels, and Emil Johansson, the creator of the LotR Project, who’ll talk about The Science of Middle-earth, The Hobbit book and the movie.

Mark Ferguson (who played Gil-galad in The Fellowship of the Ring) will again act as Master of Ceremonies in his inimitable style. Larry D. Curtis, TORn’s own MrCere, will give several talks on The Hobbit and his experiences as an embedded reporter on the film set in New Zealand.

In the Choir Workshop, held in English and German, you can learn the ‘Song of the Lonely Mountain’. A number of talks and workshops on a great variety of topics will be held in German, but several of the workshops will be conducted in both English and German (as indicated by the small letters ‘E’ and ‘D’ in the respective boxes in the schedule).

The film The Hunt for Gollum will be shown at HobbitCon, and the fan fantasy project Myrrdin will be introduced in a panel and a workshop by the film makers. Another screening will be of the Russian film parody The Trouble of the Rings Returns King Size (in Russian with optional English and German subtitles).

The Deutsche Tolkien Gesellschaft (DTG, that is the German Tolkien Society) will have their own rooms and separate activities. Last year, among other things, they offered a Tolkien quiz (and I, with considerable help from Rosie-with-the-ribbons, won a small plastic collectible figurine of Grinnah the Goblin).

hobbitcon2On Saturday and Sunday evening there will be parties and a concert; a Costume Contest is scheduled for Sunday evening, and there will be an Art Show featuring Tolkien-related fan artwork. Many sellers will offer merchandise galore, and you can get autographs and be photographed with your favourite actors (or all of them at once in a group photo) — lots of opportunities to spend money!

The programme (subject to changes, however, since Manu ‘Azog’ Bennett had to cancel, alas) as well as ticket information (tickets for the entire weekend or for any one of the three days) can be found at HobbitCon’s website. As the online ticket shop closed on Monday April 7th, those who don’t have tickets yet and spontaneously decide to attend this marvellous event will have to come to the Maritim Hotel to purchase them directly, from Friday afternoon April 18th onward. The organisers have assured me that there will still be convention tickets and hotel rooms available by then. [But you may want to double-check before travelling to Germany!]

Hoping to see many of you there!”

* * * * *

Thanks to kiwifan for sharing her thoughts and excitement! If you’re planning on going, and would like to meet up with other ‘TORnadoes’ whilst you’re there, you can always head on over to the message boards and start a thread to find out who else will be there!

Daniel Falconer: Smaug is the grand-daddy of dragons

April 7, 2014 at 8:53 pm by Demosthenes  -

The-Hobbit-The-Desolation-of-Smaug-FX-046 SciFiNow spoke to Daniel Falconer, Weta Workshop designer and author of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug: Unleashing the Dragon (order it here if you haven’t already) about the process of creating what he describes as “the grand-daddy” of fantasy dragons.

He also reveals what Benedict Cumberbatch brought to the role, and why he feels Peter Jackson understands exactly what is required from a fantasy epic.

Don’t forget to click the link to read the entire interview.

SciFiNow: Dragons seem to be enjoying a bit of a renaissance these days; what sets Smaug apart?

Falconer: I think Smaug is special because, at least as far as western dragons go, he really is the archetype upon which all modern fantasy dragons are based. It was something everyone at Weta was very mindful of when the first forays into designing him were being made. He had a lot to live up to. There have been many great dragons on our screens over the years, but I personally always felt that many of them owed a lot to what Tolkien imbued in Smaug. Those qualities have influenced the evolution of most western dragons since. Smaug is an object of awe and dread. He is ruthless and cruel, cunning and proud, avaricious and predatory, but his power and savage beauty are also attractive.

I think we are drawn to Dragons because throughout our histories and fantasies we have tended to ascribe great power to them. Something actor Benedict Cumberbatch said when I interviewed him for the book really struck a chord with me when he observed that Smaug’s allure is actually seductive. The sheer power and superiority he exudes over everything else in his world is seductive, but it is also corrupting. So, I think part of Smaug’s specialness and why we were all so looking forward to seeing him on the big screen has to do with several decades’ worth of build-up. We have seen so many wonderful dragons, but this guy is the grand-daddy of western fantasy wyrms.

SciFiNow: What were the pressures of bringing such a popular creature to life?

Falconer: With great expectation comes great pressure. If there was one common factor I found in talking to everyone associated with creating Smaug for the screen, it was an eagerness to live up to the vision conjured by Tolkien’s characterization. This dragon had to be truly jaw-dropping in every way.

That was the artistic pressure at work, the striving for excellence that, on a project involving hundreds of people, is infectious and has a way of yielding something greater than the sum of its parts. But there was also the technical pressure. I’m a writer and designer, so I’m no expert when it comes to technology of special effects, but I learned a lot as I was researching and writing this book, talking to my colleagues at Weta Digital, Weta Workshop and Park Road Post.

Peter Jackson imagined Smaug on a truly colossal scale. If he were a living, physical being he could waddle out to the airport and stretch out his wings to shade a 747 jumbo-jet under each one with room to spare, but the camera also had to be able to get very close to him, zooming in on his bus-sized head or just his eye and still read detail and complexity. That meant sculpting and painting in all that minute detail that makes a digital creature feel real, down to the last tiny scale, on something with a vast surface area. Every scale was created by hand. How much would be texture mapped and how much would be sculpted into the model itself? Was it even possible in the limited time frame of movie production? And would such an information-heavy model be unwieldy to animate and render?

Richard Armitage chats with the German Tolkien Society

April 11, 2014 at 6:44 pm by Demosthenes  -

DoSThorin01 Chairman Tobias M. Eckrich of the German Tolkien Society (Deutsche Tolkien Gesellschaft) recently chatted with Richard Armitage about his time on the Hobbit set. What he says about the Erebor interior scenes in the confrontation with Smaug being shot inside nothing but a great green box is interesting — one wonders whether a theatre background helps with the adjustment to such an absence of visual cues.

Don’t forget to follow the link at the bottom for the complete interview. You can find the English transcript immediately below the German translation.

DTG: Did you know there is a petition on Facebook, to prevent Thorin from dying in the movies? What do you think about that?

RA: I think you’ve just given away a massive spoiler for everyone who hasn’t read the book (laughs). I didn’t know there was a petition and I have to say I think it’s going to be fruitless, unfortunately.

DTG: How did your involvement with “The Hobbit” come about? Did you go to a regular casting or were you approached by the film makers?

RA: It was a fairly traditional process, actually. I auditioned and was approved by the film makers and then I met Peter Jackson […] and that was it, I was casted [sic], it was fairly straightforward.

DTG: Is being part of “The Hobbit” like any other acting job or is there something special about the project?

RA: I don´t think it has been like any other acting job that I´ve ever done. I mean it´s very rare that you get to play one character over three movies with a continuing storyline. And for such a long period of time and away from home, on the other side of the planet, so it´s not like anything I´ve done before. There was also lots of material that needed researching and has such an interest in complicated characters that needed preparation and transformation. So yes, it´s quite unique.

DTG: Was there a scene that was particularly difficult to shoot, in terms of acting or external influences?

RA: I think the end of the second movie when the dwarves fight the dragon in the mountain, that was complicated because nothing existed. It was just a green box, there was no dragon, there were no forges, and we were completely relying on Peter´s description and the art department creating images for us so that we could visualise the world we were entering and really see the beast that there was in our mind´s eye.

Bard_Bain.jpgWarner Brothers UK has posted a short new featurette on YouTube showcasing Laketown and Bard. Curiously, while the video appears to be meant as an advertisement for the new Blu-ray/DVD release of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug, the video itself is not present in any of the bonus features on the set.

The same is the case for the previously posted video “Beorn the Shapeshifter“. The Blu-ray/DVD releases do, however, feature an all new 40 minute documentary titled “Peter Jackson Invites You to the Set”.
